Here are some activities you can do at home to help your child become a better reader:
Read!
I know it may seem simple, but many studies have shown the best way to become a better reader is to read. This includes your child reading by themselves, reading to a sibling, or you reading to them. Only fifteen minutes a night can make a world of difference!!
The newspaper and magazines are wonderful for reluctant readers. The multitude of pictures and shorter selections make this genre a little less threatening.
Talk to Your Child
A conversation about what is going on in their world or what book they are reading. This will help them with comprehension and vocabulary. Try to find similarities between their life and their favorite character.
Play Games
Games like Hangman, Scrabble, Apples to Apples, and Clue require critical thinking skills necessary in reading comprehension. In addition, there are many great websites designed to improve reading skills.
